Course outcome and aims:

  • To acquire an understanding of the development of  Indian literatures through different time periods( from the Classical to the Partition )
  • To understand socio- political, cultural contexts of those times.
  • Acquire ability to compare and contrast literary works.

Unit -1

Introduction to the paper ( Background essays: Sachidanandan, joshi and others) ( 2hrs)

 

Unit 2: Classical Period (4 hrs)

Kalidasa’s Abhignyana Shakuntalam( sanskrit)

Ilango Adigal’s Silapadikaram( tamil)

 

Unit 3: Medieval Period ( 2hrs)

Study of Bhakti Movement and select representations( tamil, kannada, gujarati, Hindi)

 

Unit 4: Nationalist phase ( 5 -6 hrs)

Bengali Renaissance

Bankim Chandra’s  Anandmat

Tagore’s Select translated novels ( Gora and Home and the World)

Select works of Allama Iqbal

Subramnaia Bharati

 

Unit 5 : Partition Literature ( 4hrs)

Selection from Manto’s Mottled Dawn( urdu)

Extracts from Bhisham Sahni’s Tamas( hindi)
